Dr. Hanneske
Steyn

DR. JAMES VAN DER WESTHUYZEN

Dr. James van der Westhuyzen completed his B.Ch.D at University of Stellenbosch in 1990 after which he completed his one year Military Service in the Northern Cape. In 1991 he joined the Dental Practice of Dr. Thomas Brummer in Wynberg. He had the privilege of working with and learning from Dr. Brummer for the next 5 years, after which Dr. Brummer retired.

The Wynberg practice moved to Plumstead where Dr. van der Westhuyzen practiced from his residence for the next 18 years. Dr. van der Westhuyzen’s calm disposition makes a big difference when tending to the dental needs of patients that are anxious or fearful.

Dr. van der Westhuyzen has a keen interest in the field of restorative techniques, crown and bridge work and ensures that he stays abreast of the latest trends and techniques by regularly attending relevant refresher courses.

With a vision of expanding the practice, Dr. van der Westhuyzen relocated his practice to larger premises in Bergvliet. From here he continues to provide dental care in his customary gentle and caring manner.

DR. HANNESKE STEYN

Hanneske graduated from the University of Pretoria in 2007 where after she worked in private practice for the next few years before establishing her own practice in Pretoria in 2011.

In 2015 she joined an established Biological dental practice where the focus was on holistic dentistry before spreading her wings to Cape Town.She completed various courses in orthodontics, implantology, smile design and facial aesthetics and various others to keep herself updated with the latest in technology and techniques.

In July 2017 she joined an established Cape Town dental practice where she took on the position of senior dentist with special focus on implant and reconstructive dentistry.

Hanneske enjoys al fields of dentistry but her passion lies with specialized dentistry(biological, orthodontic and reconstructive dentistry) and she has an holistic approach when it comes to her patient's treatment.


She focuses on integrating the use of modern materials in minimally invasive ways where possible to give patients the best of care.​Hanneske is member of the South African Dental Association and is affiliated with The South African Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry and the International Team of Implantology.

She loves to travel and in her down time she plays chef at home where she can indulge in her love for the culinary. It is here where she feels she can wind down with family and friends over good food and a glass of wine.'

LOUISE VAN DER WESTHUYZEN

Louise van der Westhuyzen qualified as an Occupational Therapist at University of Stellenbosch in 1988. Louise gained her experience in both the Public and Private sectors and went on to establish her own private practice called Brain Dynamics. Louise’s field of interest includes helping people with Anxiety , Depression, Attentional and Cognitive difficulties. Louise specialises in Stress Management making use of the latest Biofeedback technologies, assisting clients with the improvement of their own health and performance at work/school, in sport or in the arts.

JULIA BUCHANAN

Julia Buchanan qualified as an Occupational Therapist (OT) at the University of Cape Town in 1988. She obtained general experience working as an OT in South Africa and the UK, and then extensive experience working as a disability claims consultant within the insurance industry.

Julia has been in private practice since 2010, and her scope of practice currently includes the following:

  • Functional and work capacity evaluations.

  • Case management, including clinical / rehabilitative and return-to-work case management.

  • Medico-legal evaluations - including road accident, personal injury, and medical malpractice claims.

  • General consulting work related to the management of disability and challenges faced by the older person in all spheres of life.

ELSABET  BESTER

Elsabet Bester qualified as an occupational therapist, with a major in psychology, at the University of Cape Town in 1991. Elsabet’s initial working experiences were in the UK in the 1990’s, where she worked in various hospital settings, including specialized rehabilitation units, as well as in community settings carrying out care assessments and implementing care plans within a care team.

Back home in South Africa, Elsabet’s work experiences continued to be varied and included aiding in the development and running of occupational therapy services from several Community Health Centres in the Cape Metropole Region, working as a claims consultant assessing disability claims and actively facilitating return to work (of claimants) where possible, as well as starting her own private practice, initially part-time, but full-time since 2005.

The services of Elsabet Bester and Associates include, but are not limited to:

  • We complete functional assessment of an individual who has suffered a life-changing injury which results in either a personal injury or medical negligence claim. We then produce a comprehensive report, providing an independent, balanced, and objective view of the client’s functioning.  Our reports will include consideration of care requirements, home modifications, equipment, and assistive technologies. 

  • We provide functional capacity evaluation services (often required for insurance / disability claims purposes) within the workplace and home too, if required.

  • We provide case management services, at various stages of the life of a minor or adult (e.g. at interim payment stage of RAF or medical negligence matters, or post-settlement), using our unique set of skills to provide essential coordination of services, advocating for additional services when necessitated, advising the client, family, and caregiver, monitoring of services, etc.

  • We can assist you with the implementation of barrier-free home modifications for the elderly and disabled persons, to enhance their ability to function safely.

NASREEN KHAN

Nasreen Khan graduated in 2006 with a Bachelor of Oral Health from the University of the Western Cape. Nasreen has been working in general dental practice since then.

She is a member of the Oral Hygiene Association of South Africa and has completed the Extended Functions Course. Nasreen’s passion for oral hygiene has provided her with the opportunity to do presentations at various schools and clinics in the community, educating them on the importance of oral hygiene.

TAJ FALAL

Taj Falal graduated at the University of the Western Cape in 2015 with bachelor degree in Oral Health. Since 2016 Taj has worked in various dental practices as an Oral Hygienist with a special interest in periodontology, a speciality in dentistry concerning the support structures of teeth.

Taj has provided Oral Health talks and promotions at public schools and communities in aiding to promote awareness of the role that an Oral Hygienist plays in patients general health profile.

Taj also completed her level three First Aid training qualifications and has volunteered in assisting ambulance officials.

LLEWELLYN DAVID GRIFF-GRIFFITHS

Llewellyn David Griff-Griffiths completed his B.O.H (Bachelor of Oral Hygiene) degree at the University of the Western Cape in 2017.​Llewellyn strives to always treat each and every patient with specialized personal care, interest and kindness, therefore putting the patient’s needs first. He strives to allocate specific tailor-made time for the patient’s treatment needs. He has been a member of the Oral Hygienist’s Association of South Africa (O.H.A.S.A) since 2015. He is also a fully qualified level 3
First Aider.

ANCHEN BUTLER

Anchen Butler started her career in 1995 training as Dental Assistant under the guidance of Doctor Brummer. She has been the assistant to Doctor James van der Westhuyzen for the past 22 years. 

Anchen is caring and thorough in her approach.

RUFQAH NOORDIEN

Rufqah Noordien is currently the chairside assistant of the amazing Dr. Simpson. She graduated in 2014 from CPUT as a Dental Assistant and has been working at various practices in that capacity.

She finds the field of Dentistry extremely fascinating and plans to venture further into it someday. She's gained experience in arrangement of other tasks, more than just being a Dental assistant at Bergvliet Dental and Medical and has been ever grateful for the opportunity to work with this team.

BUSISIWE MZO

Busisiwe Mzo matriculated in 2013 from Cape Town High School. She had an opportunity of being exposed to humanitarian activities thus resulting in persuasion of studying further. In 2018 she graduated at CPUT as Dental Chairside Assistant. In the course of this time Busisiwe received in-service training at Tygerberg Hospital (UWC) and Guguletu Public Clinic under the guidance of Dr. Ferreira.

Life is a world full of opportunities and it is up to us on how we can work to the best of our capabilities to make the lives of the next person easy in a selfless manner for the better” is what drives Busisiwe to venture for more knowledge.

She wishes she could learn as much as she can so as to give out the best of her service. Busisiwe is currently the chairside assistant of Dr Liezl Claassens.

LEONORA JORDAAN

Leonora Jordaan is the front office manager and has been the friendly face at our reception area for the past 13 years. Leonora is responsible for managing appointments and takes care of all general administrative functions including accounts.​Leonora is always willing to ensure the needs of our patients are met by our clinicians at the earliest possible times.

YVETTE SUPERMAN

Yvette comes from a creditor’s background that has groomed her in managing the frontline office duties at BDMS.​She has had extensive frontline client liaison experience and has been fortunate enough to have worked at different companies and various industries. Exposure to different working environments has trained her mind to be flexible to change of every nature.​The principles of endurance, positivity and being on top your game. ( I am still learning new things every day and have not arrived) is vital for any frontline position, and I remind myself of that daily.​Prior to her previous employment, she ran her own massage studio and once again had the opportunity of working with people in a consistent clientele which she found stimulating. She has been blessed with two beautiful sons and a life filled with mostly pleasantries which includes dancing, hiking, reading and oil painting.

LYNN WOLMARANS

After 10 years in the banking industry, completing her Level 5 Basic Ambulance Assistant course in 2005 and working at an Accounting firm, Lynn has found her passion in being multi-skilled at this practice.

Her roles varies from relieving at reception, helping out as a chair assistant, performing admin roles and being the personal assistant for James and Louise van der Westhuyzen.

Lynn says “I have always been Passionate about Customer service. Quality has always been a top priority, therefore patient care is very important to me”. She Loves people, so coming to work and making a difference in her workplace and in the lives of others, is what she lives for.
